As a new season approaches we thought it would be a good idea to reintroduce ourselves and give you some insight into what we’re currently up to and our future plans.

ELMS is split into our Central Team and Northern Team where we have the resources to cover environmental projects across the UK. Our services include habitat restoration, creation and management works across terrestrial and aquatic sites as well as vegetation and INNS control, infrastructure and grounds maintenance along with surveying and consultancy services. As a CSCS and CPCS-compliant organisation, we bring safety and professionalism to every project and are proud to be a living wage employer and fully accredited under Achilles UVDB and SMAS Worksafe Contractor schemes. With the opportunity to develop skills through various training courses and a focus on workplace progression, we believe in creating a collaborative work environment where everyone can share ideas, helping us grow and succeed together.

Our teams are close-knit and proud of the work we do, delivering high standard, measurable solutions to achieve cost effective outcomes in line with our clients project goals. As environmental scientists and conservationists we, as a team, have the knowledge and understanding to provide effective, functional solutions to environmental projects.

2025 so far…

During March 2025 we finished our Bamford project, a two year peatland restoration job and the biggest site we have worked on so far. Utilising a large number of restoration techniques we worked closely with our client, Moors for the Future, to deliver effective conservation works in order to reverse the negative impact of peatland degradation. We used machine based and manual techniques with the goal of rewetting and revegetating the site, working hard through a harsh winter with smiles on our faces and ending with a finished product that we are proud to refer to as a case study showcasing the culmination of our teamwork and expertise in the field.

Winter also saw us undertake work on other projects including peatland restoration in Cumbria for the Cumbria Wildlife Trust. We tackled reprofiling of gullies and hags, construction of peat dams as well as stone heli lifts with Heli Lift Services to create stone dams. Our teams also undertook woodland maintenance, mowing for Forestry England and planted up a series of sites across the Peak District for Moors for the Future.

With the approach of Spring and Summer our teams started on river restoration and natural flood management (NFM) works, including pond creation for Trent Rivers Trust, erosion control for the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust and fencing for the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust.

In addition, this season saw the start of a large NFM project with the Mersey Forest in collaboration with passionate conservation landowners, which we will be continuing with in early September. We have so far installed a series of leaky dams, clay core bunds, ponds and fencing as part of this ongoing project which spans three farms and aims to reduce downstream flood risk whilst improving water quality and creating habitats for wildlife.

So what's next?

With some more exciting projects coming up including the start of our Winter peatland restoration works and the continuation of our NFM and infrastructure jobs we can't wait to continue showing you what we get up to.

If you’d like to get involved we are also looking for a new team member and have a Conservation Operative role open as a year's fixed term contract. If you are keen to pursue a career in conservation and join our dedicated team, check out our job description posted on our website for more information.

Thanks for catching up with us!
